State Museum of Egyptian Art
The approach to the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich is through a monumental walled portal, which is sunk into the ground like a Pharaoh’s tomb and only accessible to visitors via a large ramp in the forecourt. Because the exhibits displayed within the 2.200 m2 of exhibition space are thousands of years old, they need the very highest level of conservatorial protection.
To address these important challenges, numerous innovations in ventilation technology and mechanical opening systems for the various display cases were incorporated right from the planning stage. The innovative concepts were then carried over into the structural planning phase to ensure a perfect exhibition outcome, which also included some novel approaches to lighting technology.
The conceptual design of the actual exhibition planned by Die Werft in collaboration with M. Kammermeier will be extremely minimal, despite all the sophisticated technology, to ensure the whole focus of attention is on the extraordinary objects of the collection. The materials used to showcase the exhibits will be limited to blackened steel, exposed concrete and non-reflecting glass. The combined effect of the ultra-modern, linear ambience and dramatic architecture will serve as a contemporary stage for these masterpieces from ancient Egypt.
Die Werft planned the entire interior of the museum, from exhibition design, material concept, media planning and communication concept right through to corporate image, logo, storage rooms, workshops and administration areas.
