Nofretete - tête-à-tête
“Nofretete – tête-à-tête” (Head-to-head with the Nefertiti) was the title of the first special exhibition for the State Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art in Munich which we created in 2014. After appearances in Doha (Qatar), Paris and Valencia, the travelling exhibition was adapted by us to suit the specific conditions of its Munich home.
Juxtaposition of modern and ancient Egyptian art was chosen to illustrate how artworks take on different, sometimes contradictory meaning and symbolism as a result of their interpretation by various art historians, museum presentation and public reception. The special feature of the exhibition concept we created for Munich was that some of the modern artworks were integrated within the permanent exhibition of the museum, in order to change visitor perception of the ancient Egyptian artefacts. To this end, we developed semi-transparent screens and plinths inspired by oriental ornamentation, which not only made the modern artworks stand out from their surroundings, but also effectively linked them to the exhibits of the permanent collection. Seating options designed with a nod to the headgear of the Nofretete were a subtle invitation to visitors to stop for a while and contemplate what they were seeing. To avoid overloading the exhibition rooms with explanatory signs, we pared this down to some introductory panels focusing on three overall themes of “artist”, “museum” and “general public”. More detailed explanation was contained in a tri-lingual leaflet, which also served as a compact guide to the special exhibition.
